Choosing the right blog niche is critical because it can determine the success of your blog. And if you choose the wrong topic, you might be setting yourself up for failure or entering to months of boring & uninspiring work.
Truly speaking, any niche can work with the right strategies. But the real hit would be to your motivation levels. For example, I personally do not follow cooking much. If I had to run a cooking & recipes blog, I would find it boring. I know it’s a good, profitable niche, but I’m just not motivated enough to write cooking content. Somewhere along the way, I know I’ll drop it. The blog will fail.
And it’s not just about your lack of interest or passion, your blog can fail due to multiple reasons in choosing a niche. Let’s see what these reasons are first so that you can make an informed decision.
There are 6 major aspects to consider while choosing a blog niche:
You shouldn’t get bored after writing a couple of blogposts on the topic you choose.
Burnouts are one of the top reasons for blogging failure. Ask yourself these questions:
Make sure that you love (really, truly love) the topic you choose.
By knowing the topic well, you can provide authentic and expert solutions to your readers.
For example, a pet blog written by a biologist holds much more value than the same written by an engineer.
Evergreen niches are topics that stays relevant throughout the years.
For example, topics like health, wealth, hobbies, relationships, etc., are evergreen niches that are relevant today and will continue to stay relevant for the years to come.
Avoid choosing seasonal niches. For example, Christmas blogs only gets visitors only during the October to December period.
Also, do not chase trends or fad either, choose solid long-term topics. Think of the evolution from Floppy Disk to CD to Pen Drives to Cloud today, a technology blog covering these devices would struggle to exist. Be ready to pivot in case you decide to write about trends.
Try to identify topics that have enough reader base but with low competition.
If there are many high authority websites competing for a small number of keywords, it’s better to avoid such niches.
Also, keep in mind that if you find there aren’t enough blogs competing in the topic you chose, there are two probable reasons:
Make sure that your topic doesn’t belong to the second category. Avoid topics with low reader base & high competition.
Keywords are the words that you wish to rank for on top of Google search results.
For example, ”best backpacks” could be a keyword travel bloggers would love to rank for.
Short tail keywords are shorter keywords (1-3 words usually). ”Best backpacks”, ”Best kitchen utensils”, ”Best mobiles”, are all short tail keywords.
Long tail keywords are longer keywords (4 or more words usually). For example, ”Best backpacks for hiking”, ”Best kitchen utensils that are cheap”, ”Best mobiles under $500”, are all long tail keywords.
Make sure to choose a topic that have enough short and long tail keywords you can write about.
If you run out of keywords in an year or two, you will be in big trouble. Choose a niche that’s big enough in terms of keywords.
Here are some keyword research tools you can use to identify low-competition, high-traffic keywords:
Wonder how hard it would be to realize after 2 years of blogging that there is no money in the topic you were writing about all this time!
All your efforts could go to waste because you were late to realize the low profitability of your niche.
For example, a blog on Koala Bears or Dolphins is not a good idea even if you are a biologist specializing on them. You would be much better off starting a blog on cats and dogs (because they are much more profitable). As a biologist, your pet blog would still be more authentic than a thousand other blogs out there.
Look into these questions while determining the blog niche:
Niches can be categorized into two:
You should choose a niche that is neither too narrow nor too broad. Also avoid mixing multiple niches (like health & wealth together in a blog).
You should stay away from broad niches like health and wealth because you will have intense competition from popular, authoritative blogs (think of competing with Healthline or Investopedia – you know you are setting yourself for failure!)
And if you decide to focus entirely on highly narrow topics like deep sea diving equipments (subniche of deep sea diving) or bird watching gears (subniche of bird watching), you might not be able to scale your blog at all.
Instead, you should choose an intermediate topic (like deep sea diving or bird watching) that’s neither too narrow nor too broad.
Another consideration is regarding the traffic generation channels. For bloggers depending on Google, email list & Facebook for traffic, it’s better to have one solid niche. Because a blog covering everything like recipes, home decor and travel together will confuse your email readers, your Facebook followers and Google algorithms. You have to focus on one topic.
The only exception is if you depend entirely on Pinterest for traffic. In that case, the niche doesn’t matter as Pinterest can drive traffic irrespective of niches.
I would recommend going with an intermediate niche that’s a best fit for all traffic channels & with limited competition as well.
In my opinion, below are the 10 best broad level niches. You should try to identify sub-niches under them.
In order to drive traffic specifically from Pinterest, the top niches are Home Decor followed by Fashion & Beauty, DIY & Crafts, Food & Drinks. See the images below for more details.
Below is a list of 100+ niche ideas that you can consider for your blog. Please note that there are thousands of niches available & capturing everything would be an impossible task. That’s why, I have restricted to capturing around 100 ideas that gives you a sense of potential niches. For example, I have only listed 15 hobbies below while there could be hundreds of ideas in this category alone!
More than searching for ideas outside, you should come up with a niche by yourself. Because that’s what your heart wants & that’s what will be successful.
Like solo travelling? Start a blog to help solo travelers.
Like knitting? Start a knitting blog.
Identify your passions & start a blog on the same. Searching on platforms for blog ideas isn’t the best method. Think & come up with ideas yourselves. Follow your interests & passions.
With that, we have come to the end of this guide. Now it’s up to you to take your time & finalize on the niche.
Choosing the right niche is important, but it should not hamper you from starting your blog. I’ve seen people pondering for days & weeks on which niche to choose – with end result being getting utterly confused & not starting a blog at all!
Look into your passions, match it with your expertise, see if it’s a profitable niche & just get started.
Another trick many people use is to go with their own names as domain name so that they are not limited by a niche. For example, if your blog domain is “yourname.com”, it’s doesn’t limit you to a single niche unlike “theblogstrategist.com” where the name itself clearly says it’s about blogging strategy!
Spend some time to identify the right niche, but do not overthink. Overthinking kills action. At the end of the day, you are the right judge of what you want to do. Follow your heart & ask your brain!
